BEYOND ASSUMPTIONS: REVISITING THE READING PROGRAM OF SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN TARLAC CITY
June 2024 EducationThinking about students’ holistic development is what I often consider as I enter a classroom scraping all the nonchalance I may display towards them. Having said this, it is my utmost interest to give what is best to the considered “hope of the nation” by Dr. Jose Rizal. As I was discerning on what possible topic or subject I would consider for this study, rummaging all the possible words and concepts that are related to my teaching profession, I came across this article saying that the Philippines ranked the least in reading comprehension based on PISA 2018 report. There was a tick in my head when my eyes started skimming over the article, and thought of why not study something about the reading skills among Filipinos. It was upon the existence of this scenario this study was born. Basically, my passion for teaching has also guided me toward this study as I imbue myself with positive vibes and philosophical principles. It is truly alarming, as a member of the Filipino community, to know how downgraded educational outcomes have become. This is not what I wanted to see in my country and in my children’s future.
